MODULE AIMS

Understand the basic facts and theories of Science by managing responsibilities for classroom and independent learning and use them for the following semester, higher studies and in daily life.

MODULE CONTENT

PHYSICS

  •  SI Units:

 

Base Units, Derived Units, SI Prefixes, Conversion of Units.

  • Kinematics:

 

Motion, Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion, Scalar and Vector, Distance, Displacement, Speed, Velocity, Graphical Representation of Motion, Acceleration, Equations of motion, Components of a Vector.

 

  • Force:

Newton’s Laws of Motion, Types of Forces, Net Force.

  • Pressure:

Definition, Units, Density, Pressure (Solids, Liquids), Atmospheric Pressure, Measurement of Pressure Using Instruments.

CHEMISTRY

  • Matter:

Definition of Matter, Physical Nature of Matter, Mass and Weight, States of Matter, Change of States, Types of Matter.

  • Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding:

Structure of Atom, Subatomic Particles, Introduction to Periodic Table, Symbol of Elements, Atomic Number and Mass Number, Electronic Configuration of an Atom, Geometric Representation of Atomic Structure, Valency, Molecules of Elements and Compounds, Ionic Bond, Covalent Bond.

 

  • Chemical Equations:

Chemical Reaction, Chemical Equation, Balancing of Chemical Equations.

BIOLOGY

  • Characteristics of Life:

Living and Non-Living Things, Characteristics of Life, Organization of Life, Plant cell, Animal Cell, Human Organ Systems.

 

  • Ecosystems:

Definition of Eco-Systems, Components, Processes, Transformation of Energy in an Ecosystem.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Demonstrate understanding of common measuring units.

  2. Understand and explain the basic principles of Mechanics (motion &force).

  3. Demonstrate understanding of pressure related to solid and fluid statics.

  4. Demonstrate understanding of matter, structure of atom and chemical bonding.

  5. Understand and explain chemical reactions and balancing chemical equations.

  6. Demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of life, organization of life, the human organ system and ecosystems.

SCHEDULED LEARNING AND TEACHING ACTIVITY

Internally developed study materials will be provided based on the required topics. Students will undertake two sessions per week combining lectures and tutorials to cover the general module content. In the Science Activity Room, students will be provided with models and instruments to enable them to understand the curriculum by simple practical experiments or through models. In addition to this, video clippings or digital data will be used as required by the topic. Worksheets that to be done in the classroom and at home will be provided. Students must utilize a wide range of books and reliable internet resources available in the library to follow an individual study programme. Assessment is done by one Quiz, one Mid-Term Examination, and one Final Examination.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The method of assessment for this module has been designed to test all the learning outcomes.  Students must demonstrate successful achievement of these learning outcomes to pass the module

MODULE PASS REQUIREMENTS

  • To pass this module, students must achieve a minimum score of 50% in each component and a minimum of 50% in overall grading.  The final module mark is the weighted average of the individual assessments.

  • Student must take all assessments, and if missed, they must submit a reasonable excuse within 2 days of reporting back.
